Just a few days ago, new nutrition standards were unveiled for school meals that are truly a huge step forward in our effort to provide a healthier future for our kids.
Schools soon will be serving more fruits, vegetables and whole grains while also decreasing the amount of sodium, sugar and fats in meals. Schools must begin to implement the standards in July, which means the next school year will be a healthier one for many of our kids!
This simply would not have happened without your help.
When the U.S. Department of Agriculture put forth proposed nutrition standards last summer, more than 130,000 people wrote to the agency in support. PreventObesity.net advocates like you joined our friends at places like the American Heart Association, Center for Science in the Public Interest, National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity, MomsRising, National Urban League and Kids Safe and Healthful Foods Project to urge the agency to implement strong standards for our kids.
Because of you, that is going to happen.
The new meal guidelines will help an entire generation. At an event announcing the new standards on Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said 32 million schoolchildren will soon benefit from the improved nutrition improvements! First Lady Michelle Obama added that the standards provide a big boost to parents who strive to feed their children the healthiest food possible.
Thank you so much for raising your voice for our nation's children. I know that 2012 will bring many more victories as we work together to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic.
